Charadrius alexandrinus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into two species, comprising the New World forms nivosus and occidentalis, and Old World alexandrinus, by Küpper et al. (2009), who make a case for the separation of nivosus and occidentalis from alexandrinus on the basis of genetic distance, leg and wing length, and chick plumage and calls, and this treatment has been adopted by AOU (2010).

Le charadrius alexandrinus (Sibley et Monroe 1990, 1993) a été divisé en deux espèces, comprenant les variantes du Nouveau Monde : nivosus et occidentalis, et la variante de l'Ancien Monde : alexandrinus, par Küpper et al. (2009). Ils plaident en faveur de la séparation des nivosus et occidentalis par rapport aux alexandrinus, sur la base de leur distance génétique, de la longueur des pattes et des ailes, et du plumage des poussins et de leurs cris. Cette séparation a été adoptée par l'AOU (2010).
